Sam Altman

Altman grew up outside St. Louis, the eldest of four children of a dermatologist and a real-estate broker, and came out as gay at seventeen while still in high school. He studied computer science at Stanford for two years, dropped out in 2005, and at nineteen co-founded Loopt, a location-based social app that raised more than 30 million dollars in venture funding before selling to Green Dot for 43.4 million in 2012. He then joined Y Combinator as a partner, became its president in 2014 at not yet thirty, and spent five years pushing the incubator into "hard technology" investing before leaving in 2019 to run OpenAI full time.

OpenAI began in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab, co-founded by Altman with Elon Musk, Greg Brockman and others on pledges eventually totaling far less than the billion dollars first announced. Altman became CEO in 2019 and oversaw the November 2022 release of ChatGPT, which drew a million users in five days and made him a defining public face of the generative-AI boom. On November 17, 2023, OpenAI's board fired him, saying he had not been "consistently candid" with them; more than 700 of the company's roughly 770 employees signed a letter threatening to quit, Microsoft offered him a job, and the board reinstated him four days later with a reconstituted membership. By 2026 he remained CEO, steering OpenAI through an increasingly complicated relationship with Microsoft and intensifying competition from Google and Anthropic.

In January 2025, Altman's sister Ann sued him in federal court alleging he had sexually abused her starting when she was three years old; Altman, their mother and their brothers issued a joint statement denying the allegations and saying Ann "is mentally ill and continues to demand money from us." Separately, former OpenAI board member Helen Toner said afterward that the board had fired Altman in part over withheld information — including that he had not told them in advance about ChatGPT's launch or disclosed his personal stake in OpenAI's startup fund — and that two executives had described a pattern of what she called psychological abuse; Altman has disputed that characterization, and the employee revolt that followed his firing suggests many inside the company did not share it. Both episodes remain contested rather than resolved.

Whether Altman is remembered as the person who safely stewarded the arrival of transformative artificial intelligence, or as a case study in unaccountable power concentrated in one persuasive executive, is on the evidence of 2026 not yet decidable. OpenAI has not finished converting from nonprofit to for-profit structure, its technical lead over rivals looks less secure than in 2023, and Altman survived a board revolt whose full internal account the people in the room still dispute. In April 2026 someone threw a Molotov cocktail at his San Francisco home, and shots were fired at the same address two days later; he has said he believes it reflects opposition to AI itself. It is an unfinished story.
