Satya Nadella

Nadella grew up in Hyderabad, the son of an elite civil servant and a Sanskrit lecturer, and has said cricket taught him more about leading people than anything else in his life. He earned an electrical-engineering degree at Manipal, then crossed to the United States for a master's in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, briefly worked at Sun Microsystems, and joined Microsoft in 1992 — the same year he married Anupama Priyadarshini, the daughter of his father's old colleague. He finished an MBA at the University of Chicago at night while climbing the company's ranks, running server, cloud and enterprise divisions for two decades before anyone outside Redmond had heard his name.

Microsoft named him CEO on February 4, 2014, its third ever, after twenty-two years of internal engineering and management roles. He rebuilt the company's culture around what he called a growth mindset and its business around the cloud, pushing Azure to the center of Microsoft's revenue and reversing decades of hostility toward open-source software with the declaration that "Microsoft loves Linux." He bought LinkedIn for 26.2 billion dollars in 2016 and GitHub for 7.5 billion in 2018, then bet heavily on artificial intelligence through a deepening partnership with OpenAI, weaving its models into Word, Excel and Windows as Copilot. Microsoft stock rose roughly tenfold over his first decade as CEO, and by 2026 he remained both chairman and chief executive, still steering the company's enormous AI wager.

In October 2014, three months into a major push on gender equity, Nadella told a room of women in computing that they should not ask for a raise and should trust the system to pay them fairly. The backlash was immediate; he apologized within hours and later called himself "completely wrong." The remark sits oddly against what became the defining private fact of his tenure: his son Zain, born legally blind with cerebral palsy and quadriplegia, required round-the-clock care for the twenty-six years of his life until his death in February 2022, and Nadella has said repeatedly that raising him is what taught him the empathy he tries, imperfectly, to run the company on.

By market value Microsoft became one of the largest companies in the world on Nadella's watch, and the turnaround from the stagnant Ballmer years is treated in business writing as close to settled fact. What is not settled is the AI bet underneath it — the capital Microsoft has committed to OpenAI and to data centers, and whether it pays off the way the cloud pivot did. In January 2026 Nadella asked the public to stop calling AI-generated output "slop"; the request backfired into a viral joke, "Microslop," that spread faster than his defense of it. Which story — the builder of the cloud era, or the executive who mistimed the AI one — turns out lasting is not yet answerable.
