Pichai grew up in Chennai in a two-room apartment where the family got its first phone at twelve and its first car, a secondhand Fiat, a few years after that, a detail he has repeated often enough in interviews that it reads as calculated humility, though the facts check out. His father was an electrical engineer at GEC, his mother a stenographer. He tested into IIT Kharagpur for metallurgical engineering, then left India for a Stanford master's in materials science his father borrowed money to afford, followed by a stint at Applied Materials, a Wharton MBA, and a few years at McKinsey before Google hired him in 2004 to work on search toolbars nobody else wanted to build.

He built Chrome from a standing start in 2008 into the world's dominant browser, then took over Android in 2013 after its co-founder left the company. Google named him CEO in August 2015 as it reorganized into Alphabet, and in December 2019 he added the parent company's chief executive title as well, when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped back from day-to-day management entirely. Under Pichai, Google has folded artificial intelligence, the Gemini model family and AI-generated search summaries, into products used by billions of people, while defending its core search and advertising business in the two largest antitrust actions of the era, one brought by the U.S. Department of Justice and one enforced repeatedly by the European Union. He testified for the company in both.

Two governments have ruled, formally, that the company Pichai runs broke the law to stay dominant. The European Union has fined Google billions of dollars since 2018 over how it bundles search, advertising and Android. In September 2025 a U.S. federal judge found that Google illegally maintained a monopoly in search, and while the court let it keep Chrome, it barred the exclusive default-placement deals that built that monopoly in the first place. None of it has cost Pichai personally: Alphabet awarded him an equity package reportedly worth up to 692 million dollars for 2025, on the heels of 12,000 layoffs in 2023 and the 2024 firing of employees who protested the company's cloud contract with the Israeli military.

Pichai is running the most consequential antitrust remedy in a generation of American tech law and one of the biggest bets on artificial intelligence at the same time, and it is not yet clear which one defines him. The September 2025 ruling could have broken Google apart and did not — whether the milder remedies imposed instead actually restore competition to search, or simply formalize what already existed, will take years to show. Meanwhile Gemini and AI-generated search have to hold off Google's own newest rivals. Both stories are still being written, and 2026 sits closer to their middle than their end.
