Chesky grew up in Niskayuna, New York, the son of two social workers, and studied industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he captained the hockey team and competed as a bodybuilder on the side. After graduating in 2004 he worked as an industrial designer in Los Angeles, making about 40,000 dollars a year on products nobody remembers now. In October 2007 he moved to San Francisco to live with his RISD classmate Joe Gebbia, and when neither of them could make rent, they put air mattresses on the apartment floor and rented them, with breakfast, to attendees of a design conference the city's hotels had sold out. Nathan Blecharczyk, who could code, joined soon after.

The site, first called Airbed and Breakfast, produced two bookings before South by Southwest in 2008 and nearly failed — the founders paid down debt selling election-themed cereal, Obama O's and Cap'n McCain's, at that year's Democratic convention. Y Combinator took them in early 2009 for a 20,000-dollar stake, Sequoia Capital followed with 585,000 dollars, and Chesky became CEO that fall. Airbnb grew into a marketplace spanning millions of listings in nearly every country, survived a pandemic that briefly erased most of its bookings overnight, and went public in December 2020. Chesky has since pushed the company past home rentals into an Experiences business and, from 2024, a broader vision of Airbnb as a platform for travel services generally, a reinvention he frames as necessary now that home-sharing itself has matured.

The company Chesky built on the promise that anyone could rent a spare room has become, in many cities' telling, part of why rooms are so expensive in the first place. New York City's 2023 short-term rental law effectively ended most Airbnb listings in the five boroughs. Chesky's company sued and lost, then dropped the fight to focus on smaller battles over enforcement, while dozens of other cities restrict or ban the practice on similar grounds, that professional operators, not casual hosts, came to dominate the platform and pulled long-term housing out of tight markets. Chesky, whose own stake was worth roughly 10 billion dollars in 2026, answers by saying Airbnb wants regulation because being regulated is a form of being recognized.

Whether Airbnb is remembered as the company that unlocked a more efficient use of housing or as an accelerant of the affordability crisis in the cities that host it is still argued block by block, hearing by hearing. Chesky has bet the next phase of his career on proving the platform can be something bigger than either version, a booking layer for experiences and services well beyond spare rooms, while a growing list of cities bet the opposite, that the original product needs to be constrained. Both bets are running at once in 2026, and neither has an outcome yet.
