Swift grew up in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, on a Christmas tree farm her family kept and spent summers at, the daughter of a Merrill Lynch stockbroker father and a mother who had worked in mutual fund marketing. Her grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, sang opera, and hearing her in church is one of Swift's earliest memories of music. At eleven she talked her mother into a trip to Nashville to shop a demo to every label in town, every label passed. At twelve a local computer repairman taught her guitar chords. At fourteen, Sony/ATV signed her as a songwriter, the youngest the publisher had ever taken on, and her father transferred to the company's Nashville office so the family could move there with her.

Big Machine Records signed her the next year, in 2005, on the condition that she write her own songs, a condition she never needed, since she has been the credited lead writer on every record she's released. Fourteen Grammys and four Album of the Year wins followed, along with the title of the highest-grossing touring act in history: the Eras Tour, which ran from 2023 into 2024, brought in roughly two billion dollars, the first tour ever to clear one billion on its own. In 2019 Scooter Braun bought Big Machine, and with it the master recordings of her first six albums, without offering her the chance to buy them herself, Swift refused his terms, spent five years re-recording four of those albums as "Taylor's Version," and in May 2025 finally bought the original masters outright.

The re-recording project ran on the argument that an artist should own her own work, which made the criticism that followed her private jet feel pointed: a 2022 sustainability-industry report ranked her the highest CO2-emitting celebrity tracked, with emissions estimated at more than a thousand times an average person's, and her team's response, that the plane was often loaned to others and that she bought carbon offsets, persuaded few critics. In December 2023 her lawyers sent a college student, Jack Sweeney, a cease-and-desist letter over his public tracking of her flights, calling it "stalking" given her history with obsessive fans, Sweeney kept posting, using nothing but publicly available flight records, and the letter got more attention than the tracking ever had on its own.

By 2025 the ownership fights were mostly won: she held her masters outright and released The Life of a Showgirl that October to the biggest first-week sales any album has posted in the United States. She got engaged to the football player Travis Kelce in August 2025, with no wedding date announced as of mid-2026. In June 2026 she wrote a song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," for Toy Story 5, a small return to the country-adjacent sound she started with at fourteen. The arguments about her, genius businesswoman or oversized brand, have not settled, mostly because her career keeps adding evidence for both sides faster than anyone can weigh it.
