Lamar was born in Compton to Kenneth Duckworth, a former Chicago gang member, and Paula Oliver, who had moved west that same year to get her husband away from the life he was trying to leave. The family cycled through Section 8 housing and food stamps, and at five Lamar watched a man shot dead from a passing car outside the apartment. Teachers noticed something else in him early — a first-grade teacher praised his use of the word audacity, and a seventh-grade English teacher paired poetry with hip-hop to reach students living inside the same violence he was writing about. He graduated Centennial High in 2005 with straight A's and chose rap over college, recording as K.Dot with a friend, Dave Free, in Free's garage.

Top Dawg Entertainment signed him at 16, and mixtapes carried him through his early twenties before Section.80 in 2011 and, a year later, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, a concept album about growing up in Compton that critics still rank among hip-hop's best. To Pimp a Butterfly followed in 2015, then Damn in 2017, which won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first ever given to an album outside classical or jazz. He co-headlined the Super Bowl LVI halftime show in 2022 and headlined it alone in 2025, drawing the largest audience in the broadcast's history. Along the way he collected 27 Grammy Awards, more than any rapper before him, while a 2024 feud with Drake produced the single Not Like Us, his biggest commercial hit.

That single is also the clearest case of Lamar using his platform the way a prosecutor would rather than an artist: it accused Drake, by name and directly, of being a pedophile, based on nothing that had ever been charged or proven in court. The accusation helped make it the biggest song of Lamar's career and won five Grammys, including Song and Record of the Year in 2025. Drake sued Universal Music Group, both artists' shared label, for defamation over the lyrics — a federal judge dismissed the case in October 2025 as nonactionable opinion within the traditions of rap-battle hyperbole, and Drake has since appealed. The ruling protected the song legally. It did not settle whether an unproven accusation of child abuse made a fair way to win a rap battle.

None of it slowed him down. The Grand National Tour he co-headlined with SZA through 2025 became the highest-grossing co-headlining tour on record, and he kept turning up on other artists' songs into 2026, from Clipse to his cousin Baby Keem. Barack Obama had named To Pimp a Butterfly his favorite album of 2015, a nod toward the mainstream respectability Lamar has mostly kept alongside the controversy. The Drake lawsuit is still working through the appeals courts, which means the legal argument over Not Like Us, unlike the chart battle, has not actually ended.
