Beyoncé Knowles grew up in Houston, the daughter of a Xerox sales manager who eventually quit his job to manage her singing group and a hairdresser and salon owner who designed its costumes. She won a school talent show at seven singing a cover of Imagine, joined an all-girl group called Girl's Tyme at eight, and lost badly on Star Search at eleven, freezing on stage against a rival act. Her father, Mathew Knowles, left corporate work in 1995 to manage the renamed Destiny's Child full time, a level of control that later cost the group two of its original members, who left amid disputes over management and pay before the classic lineup solidified around 1999.

Destiny's Child sold tens of millions of records before disbanding in 2005, and Beyoncé's solo career quickly outgrew it: Dangerously in Love in 2003, B'Day in 2006, and by 2008, the year she married the rapper Jay-Z, she was releasing double albums under an alter ego, Sasha Fierce. She surprise-released a self-titled visual album with no promotion in 2013, then Lemonade in 2016, a meditation on infidelity and Black womanhood that topped every chart it touched. Renaissance in 2022 turned toward the dance and house music built decades earlier by Black and queer artists, and Cowboy Carter in 2024 pushed into country music and won Album of the Year at the Grammys, the first Black woman to take that prize in 26 years. She now holds more Grammy Awards than anyone in the award's history.

The independence her music preaches took years to actually practice. Mathew Knowles managed nearly every part of her career from childhood through her mid-twenties, negotiating contracts and controlling money even as her songs argued for self-determination. Beyoncé fired him as her manager in March 2011, mid-pregnancy, in a split reported at the time as bitter and financial. He later sued members of her team, and the two spent years repairing the relationship in public increments rather than through any single reconciliation. She has also faced recurring scrutiny from critics and rival songwriters over how much of her writing credit on hit records reflects direct authorship versus a large collaborative team assembled around her, a dispute common in modern pop but sharper given how central authorship is to her reputation.

By 2025 she held more Grammy Awards than anyone in the prize's history and had turned Cowboy Carter into the highest-grossing country tour ever staged, closing a stretch in which she moved from R&B star to genre-crossing archivist, reclaiming Black roots in country and dance music the industry had long credited to white performers. The business side grew alongside the music: a hair-care line, an athletic-wear label, a whiskey brand, and a production company that now function as a small conglomerate built around her name. Where she ranks against the other titans of pop music remains an argument critics have every year at awards season, but the Grammy count is no longer one of them.
