Laurene Powell Jobs

Laurene Powell was born in West Milford, New Jersey, and later said she learned self-sufficiency early, without detailing why. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a second in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1985, then spent three years as a fixed-income trading strategist at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch Asset Management before enrolling at Stanford's business school. In October 1989 she attended a guest lecture by Steve Jobs, then between companies after his ouster from Apple, and the two married in March 1991 at Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel in a Buddhist ceremony, the same year she finished her MBA.

Powell Jobs co-founded a natural-foods company, Terravera, in the 1990s, then in 1997 co-founded College Track, a college-access nonprofit whose graduates attend four-year colleges at roughly 90 percent, against a national rate near 24 percent for first-generation students. After Steve Jobs died in 2011, she inherited the bulk of his fortune, including a large Disney stake and tens of millions of Apple shares, and used it to found Emerson Collective, a hybrid investment and philanthropic vehicle structured as an LLC rather than a foundation, which lets it fund political advocacy alongside grants. She became lead investor and chair of The Atlantic in 2017, co-founded the XQ Institute in 2015 to redesign American high schools, and in 2021 committed 3.5 billion dollars over a decade to the Waverley Street Foundation.

The same structure that gives Emerson Collective its flexibility, an LLC rather than a registered nonprofit, is what critics point to when they question it. It faces none of a foundation's disclosure requirements, so there is no public ledger of exactly where the billions go or how much reaches the causes she names, and Inside Philanthropy named her its least transparent mega-donor in 2019. Powell Jobs has said the anonymity is deliberate, meant to keep attention on the work rather than the giver. The public record on her own family carries a similar tension: when her stepdaughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs published a memoir in 2018 describing a difficult, at times withholding, childhood inside the family Powell Jobs ran, Powell Jobs called it false, without specifying which parts.

How all this settles is still an open question. Powell Jobs is worth close to 12 billion dollars, moving with Disney and Apple stock, and Emerson Collective's opaque structure means outside observers cannot yet measure whether its billions in education, immigration, and climate spending produced results proportionate to the money, or whether the anonymity she prefers will read, in a decade, as humility or as unaccountable influence over media and politics through her ownership of The Atlantic and her giving to Democratic campaigns. She continues to expand the operation: the Waverley Street Foundation's ten-year, 3.5-billion-dollar climate commitment only began in 2021, and most of what it funds has not yet had time to show whether it worked.
