Priscilla Chan

Chan grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts, the oldest of three daughters of ethnic Chinese parents who had fled Vietnam by boat, and by grade school she was interpreting for the grandparents who helped raise her while her parents worked. She graduated valedictorian of Quincy High School, captained the tennis team, and became the first person in her family to go to college, on a full scholarship to Harvard, where she earned a biology degree in 2007. She taught elementary science for a year, then went to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, finishing her pediatrics residency in 2015 and practicing as a pediatrician at San Francisco General Hospital.

Chan married Mark Zuckerberg on May 19, 2012, the day after Facebook's initial public offering, and left full-time clinical pediatrics in 2017 to run the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the venture the couple founded together in December 2015 with a pledge to give away 99 percent of their Facebook shares, then worth roughly 45 billion dollars, over their lifetimes. CZI funds science, education and criminal-justice initiatives and has moved billions of dollars into grants, including 75 million dollars to San Francisco General Hospital and 120 million dollars to Bay Area public schools. In 2016 Chan also co-founded the Primary School, a free clinic-and-school hybrid in East Palo Alto built on a premise drawn from her own training: a child cannot learn well while sick, hungry or medically neglected.

CZI is structured as a limited liability company rather than a traditional foundation, which lets it fund political lobbying and for-profit investments alongside grants but also frees it from a foundation's public disclosure requirements — critics call it a vehicle for enormous, largely unaccountable influence dressed as charity. The contradiction showed plainly in April 2025, when the Primary School, the free health-and-education model Chan had built from her own clinical experience, announced it would close its East Palo Alto and San Leandro campuses for lack of funding, even as CZI pledged 50 million dollars over five years toward the transition. A couple sitting on tens of billions of dollars in committed philanthropy had let its single most personal, hands-on project run out of money.

Chan converted to Judaism in 2022 and continues to run CZI's daily operations alongside Zuckerberg, who unveiled a seven-foot statue of her in 2024 that drew as much mockery online as admiration. Whether the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative amounts to a genuinely more flexible model of philanthropy or simply gives a technology fortune more room to operate without the accountability a foundation would require is still argued in the nonprofit world with no consensus, and the Primary School closures have only sharpened that argument rather than settled it.
