Dustin Lee Hoffman was born August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, the son of a prop supervisor and furniture salesman; his Jewish family had roots in Kyiv and Iași, and he did not learn what that meant until he was ten, in a home that had mostly let religion go. He planned on medicine at Santa Monica College before switching to acting, then spent roughly a decade broke, unemployed and, by his own account and others', simply hard to cast -- short, unconventional-looking, once described as resembling Barbra Streisand in drag. He trained at the Pasadena Playhouse alongside Gene Hackman, then at Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio, and was still teaching acting classes for rent when Mike Nichols, having rejected him for a Broadway musical, cast him instead as Benjamin Braddock.

The Graduate made Hoffman a star in 1967 and an unlikely one -- thirty years old playing a college graduate, cast for exactly the awkwardness that had kept him unemployed. Seven Oscar nominations followed across five decades, with wins for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1980 and Rain Man in 1989, alongside a run of roles built on total immersion: not sleeping for days to play a torture victim in Marathon Man, which drew Laurence Olivier's reply, 'My dear boy, have you ever tried simply acting?' He played Tootsie's Dorothy Michaels, Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy, and Raymond Babbitt's savant stillness in Rain Man, three performances built on nearly opposite instincts, and kept working past eighty, voicing Kung Fu Panda's Master Shifu and appearing in Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in 2024.

In 2017 and 2018, seven women accused Hoffman of sexual misconduct spanning decades, the most detailed account from Anna Graham Hunter, who said he groped her and made lewd remarks when she was a seventeen-year-old intern on a 1985 television production. Hoffman apologized for that specific incident while disputing others, and Slate later reported allegations involving Meryl Streep during Kramer vs. Kramer, though Streep's own representative said the two had already discussed it privately and she had accepted his apology years before the story ran. When John Oliver pressed him about the allegations at a public screening in December 2017, Hoffman argued that accusation alone was being treated as verdict -- a defense that satisfied almost no one watching, and that he has not substantially revised since.

Hoffman is still working past eighty, still receiving honors bestowed years before the allegations surfaced, and still, in most profiles, described first by The Graduate and Rain Man rather than by 2017. Whether that ordering survives him is genuinely unresolved: the allegations were serious enough to end other careers outright and did not end his, and neither the industry nor his own account of events has settled on why. What is certain is only the work -- six decades of it, and still adding titles.
