The refugee who spent decades proving mountains are not cones
Mandelbrot was born November 20, 1924, in Warsaw to a Lithuanian Jewish family, his father a clothing trader and his mother a dental surgeon. An uncle who despised rote learning tutored him privately and taught him to see problems geometrically rather than solve them by formula, a habit that outlasted every school he later attended. The family left Poland for France in 1936, drawn partly by that uncle, a mathematician already established in Paris, and Mandelbrot later said plainly that the move saved their lives. When the war reached France they fled again, to the town of Tulle, where acquaintances were killed and the family, by his own account, simply got lucky.
He studied at the École Polytechnique under Gaston Julia and Paul Lévy, took a master's in aeronautics at Caltech, and earned a doctorate in Paris in 1952, then spent a year at Princeton on John von Neumann's sponsorship. In 1958 he joined IBM's Watson Research Center and stayed 35 years, using the company's early computers to chase a question about coastlines that had no clean answer in standard geometry. He coined the word fractal in 1975, visualized the now-famous Mandelbrot set in 1979 and 1980, and in 1982 published The Fractal Geometry of Nature, showing that clouds, mountains, and coastlines all shared a kind of roughness ordinary mathematics had no vocabulary for. He later applied the same statistical thinking to financial markets, arguing that price swings were wilder and less random than economists assumed.
None of it came from inside the mathematics establishment. Mandelbrot worked most of his career at a corporate lab rather than a university, publishing across mathematics, economics, physics, and linguistics in a way that made him hard to file under any single department, and colleagues in pure mathematics were openly skeptical of a man who trusted pictures over proofs. He did not hold a tenured academic position until Yale hired him in 1987, and he was not granted tenure there until 1999, at 75, decades after the work that made him famous. The refugee habit of getting by on what worked, rather than what the rules said should work, ran through the science and through the career alike.
He died of pancreatic cancer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October 14, 2010, at 85. The Mandelbrot set had by then become one of the most reproduced images to come out of twentieth-century mathematics, printed on posters and t-shirts by people who had never read the equations behind it. He received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1993 and was named an Officer of France's Legion of Honour in 2006 — an asteroid carries his name. His memoir, The Fractalist, appeared in 2012, after his death, and mathematicians are still arguing about whether fractal geometry is a genuine new field or, as some of his old critics still say, a very good way of drawing pictures.
