He took the word quark out of Finnegans Wake

His parents came out of Czernowitz in the old Austro-Hungarian empire, and his father taught English to immigrants in New York. The son went through Columbia Grammar and took a Yale physics degree in 1948, at 18, having already sat on the Yale team that placed second in the national Putnam mathematics competition. Then the machinery of prestige jammed. Princeton rejected him. Harvard admitted him and could not fund him. Only MIT offered money, in a letter from Victor Weisskopf inviting him to be a research assistant, and Gell-Mann, who had no idea MIT was any good at physics, was so miserable when he got there that he later said it was the first time he considered killing himself. He finished the doctorate anyway, in 1951.

He gave the strong force its bookkeeping. A quantum number he called strangeness explained why certain cosmic-ray particles took so long to decay. In 1958 he and Richard Feynman, working alongside a rival pair, established the chiral structure of the weak interaction. In 1961 he sorted the hadrons into families of eight and called the scheme the eightfold way, after the Buddhist path. Three years later he proposed that those families were built from three fractionally charged constituents, and took their name from a line in Finnegans Wake: three quarks for Muster Mark. George Zweig had the same idea and called them aces. The Nobel Prize came in 1969. In 1972 Gell-Mann and three collaborators named quantum chromodynamics, and he later co-authored the seesaw explanation of why neutrinos weigh almost nothing.

Two things sit badly. In 1972 he was criticized for belonging to JASON, the advisory group that worked for the Defense Department during the Vietnam War, and his appearances in France and Italy drew protests. The other is Jeffrey Epstein. Gell-Mann acknowledged Epstein's financial support, routed through the Santa Fe Institute, in his 1994 book. He contributed to the collection of birthday letters assembled for Epstein in 2003. He was reported to have attended a conference on Epstein's private island in 2011, and his name appears in Epstein's address book. In 2025 Ghislaine Maxwell testified that she had made the introduction. There is also George Zweig, who proposed the same three constituents at the same time, called them aces, and is not the man the word quark belongs to.

He died at home in Santa Fe on May 24, 2019. The novelist Cormac McCarthy said that losing him was like losing the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The physics is not contested — quarks, color charge and the eightfold way are furniture in the Standard Model — but the name has had a second life he did not choose. In 2002 Michael Crichton coined the Gell-Mann amnesia effect, for readers who catch a newspaper botching their own subject and then trust the next page anyway. Crichton admitted he had attached Gell-Mann's name to it purely to borrow the prestige. George Johnson's biography Strange Beauty, which its subject disliked and winced at, was reissued in 2023 by the institute Gell-Mann helped found.
