Wayne Gretzky was born January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, to Walter Gretzky, a Bell Canada technician, and Phyllis Hockin Gretzky, the oldest of five children. His father flooded the backyard every winter into a rink the family called the Wally Coliseum and coached Wayne on it for hours, drilling in a philosophy that became the boy's signature: skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been. By ten he was scoring more than 300 goals in a single minor-hockey season, a pace that got him profiled on Canadian television at eleven and pushed him into ever-older leagues; at sixteen he took the number 99 only because his hero Gordie Howe's 9 was already taken.

Gretzky turned professional at seventeen, signing with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association in June 1978 before a trade sent him to the Edmonton Oilers that November; when the WHA folded into the NHL the following year, so did he. He won four Stanley Cups with Edmonton, in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988, and nine Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player, and by the time he retired in 1999 he held 61 NHL records, including career totals that still stand: 894 goals, 1,963 assists, and 2,857 points, more than any other player has scored. He played eight more seasons after Edmonton, with the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers, retiring at Madison Square Garden on April 18, 1999, the night the NHL retired his number 99 leaguewide.

Two hours after Edmonton won its fourth Stanley Cup in 1988, its owner told Gretzky he was being traded to Los Angeles, a deal that sent him, on his own honeymoon, out of the country that had treated him as national property; a member of Canada's parliament demanded the government intervene, and owner Peter Pocklington was burned in effigy outside the arena. In 2006, a gambling-ring investigation, Operation Slapshot, named Gretzky's wife, actress Janet Jones, among those under scrutiny alongside Rick Tocchet, his own assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes; Gretzky himself was never charged or personally accused of wrongdoing, and Jones's exact role was never resolved publicly. He said then, and still says now, that he is simply Canadian, even as that claim is tested again decades later over a very different kind of trade.

Gretzky is sixty-five in 2026, an NHL studio analyst for Turner Sports and, more contentiously, a golfing friend of President Donald Trump, who has floated Gretzky as a possible governor if Canada ever became the fifty-first American state. The joke, repeated often during a stretch of real trade tension between the two countries, has cost Gretzky standing at home that four Stanley Cups and 894 goals never touched: he has been booed in Canadian arenas and accused of disloyalty in the Canadian press, and has answered mainly by insisting, repeatedly, that he remains entirely Canadian. Whether that friendship becomes a footnote or the defining fact of his life after hockey is a question hockey itself cannot settle.
