Tory Burch

Tory Burch was born Tory Robinson on June 17, 1966, and grew up in a 250-year-old farmhouse near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with three brothers and a wealthy investor father who took her to museums and taught her to appreciate design. She studied art history at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1988, and a Semester at Sea program that exposed her to poverty abroad shaped the philanthropic bent she carried into business later. In New York she worked in public relations and advertising for the designer Zoran, then at Harper's Bazaar, then at Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang and the Spanish house Loewe, absorbing the industry from the marketing side rather than the design table for more than a decade before she tried building a label of her own.

Burch opened her first store in Manhattan's Nolita neighborhood in February 2004, selling a preppy-bohemian mix built around a signature tunic and a ballet flat with a gold medallion, and nearly sold out on opening day. In April 2005 Oprah Winfrey introduced her on television as the next big thing in fashion, and the brand's website took eight million hits in the following 24 hours, a single appearance that outperformed any ad budget. She built the label into a global business, more than 400 stores by the mid-2020s and placement in some 3,000 retail locations, while adding activewear under the Tory Sport label in 2015. In 2009 she founded the Tory Burch Foundation to fund loans, mentoring and education for women entrepreneurs, later distributing more than 100 million dollars in affordable capital through a partnership with Bank of America.

Tory and Christopher Burch married in 1996, and he was one of the label's founding investors, giving the company its 28 percent stake that carried his name into every store even after they divorced in 2006. They stayed business partners through the split, an arrangement that eventually curdled: in 2011 he launched C. Wonder, a budget preppy retailer her own company accused in court of selling knockoffs of her top items, while he countersued alleging she was blocking him from selling his stake. The dispute ran until January 2013, when both sides settled and he sold his remaining shares to outside investors. She had become a billionaire by then. The brand still carries the surname of a marriage that ended in 2006, kept because by then Tory Burch was no longer a person's name but a company worth billions.

Burch remarried in 2018, to the former LVMH executive Pierre-Yves Roussel, who took over as chief executive of her company while she stayed on as chairman and chief creative officer, an unusual arm's-length arrangement in a business built entirely on her own name and image. Time named her one of the world's hundred most influential people in 2024, the same year her company made the magazine's list of most influential companies. Her net worth is estimated near a billion dollars. Whether the foundation and its lending program outlast the interest a fashion brand generates once its founder eventually steps back is, like most things about a living business, still an open question.
