The Robinsons rented the upstairs of 7436 South Euclid Avenue in South Shore from the great-aunt who lived below and taught Michelle the piano. Her father ran pumps at a city water plant, served as a Democratic precinct captain and had multiple sclerosis, which is part of why she decided early to give nobody any trouble and to be excellent instead. Her mother had been a secretary at the Spiegel catalog store. She and her brother Craig, 21 months older, both skipped second grade. She got into Whitney Young, the first magnet high school in Chicago, and rode three hours a day to the Near West Side to attend it. Honor roll four years, student council treasurer, salutatorian in 1981. Teachers had warned her against setting her sights too high.

At Princeton she majored in sociology and wrote a 99-page thesis on Black graduates of white institutions, mailing a questionnaire to 400 Black alumni and getting fewer than 90 back. The answers did not support her hope that they still identified with the communities they came from. Harvard Law followed in 1988, then Sidley Austin, where the firm assigned her to mentor a summer associate named Barack Obama. She left the law in 1991 for the mayor's office, ran Chicago's Public Allies branch from 1993 and set fundraising records that held 12 years, became a University of Chicago associate dean in 1996 and a hospital vice president in 2005. As First Lady she launched Let's Move! in February 2010, planted the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt, and ran Reach Higher, Let Girls Learn and Joining Forces.

At Princeton the mother of a white roommate tried to have her daughter reassigned. Obama has said the campus was where she first became conscious of her race, and that she felt like a visitor on it. In 1991 her father died and her friend Suzanne Alele died of cancer, and she left corporate law within months. In 2008 the Fox News columnist Cal Thomas called her an angry Black woman and websites set about making the label stick, another Fox host described the couple's fist bump as a terrorist fist jab, and a line about being proud of her country for the first time was treated as a gaffe she spent the summer answering. By August the clothes and the bookings had both been softened. In 2013 Politico called her a feminist nightmare for not using the position harder.

She topped Gallup's most admired woman poll three straight years after leaving. Becoming, in 2018, sold 11.5 million copies within a year and won a Grammy for the audiobook. The Light We Carry followed in 2022 and The Look in 2025. She has a production company with her husband, two Children's and Family Emmys, and since March 2025 a podcast with her brother. Her address at the 2024 Democratic convention was called electrifying by the New York Times, and a Reuters/Ipsos poll that July found her the only Democrat tested who beat Donald Trump. She has ruled out running, in her memoir in as many words. She stood at the opening of her husband's presidential center in June 2026.
