Meg Whitman grew up in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, and arrived at Princeton intending to study medicine. A summer job selling advertising for Business Today magazine changed her direction, and she graduated with an economics degree in 1977 before earning her MBA at Harvard two years later. She spent the next two decades climbing conventional corporate ladders rather than building anything of her own — brand management at Procter and Gamble, strategy work at Disney, a stretch at Bain and Company, then chief executive stints running Florists' Transworld Delivery and Hasbro's Playskool division, where she helped bring the Teletubbies to American shelves. None of it suggested what came next.

Whitman joined eBay as chief executive in March 1998, when the company had 30 employees and 4 million dollars in annual revenue, and ran it for a decade while it grew to roughly 15,000 employees and 8 billion dollars in revenue, acquiring PayPal in 2002 and Skype in 2005 along the way. She left eBay in 2007, ran unsuccessfully for California governor in 2010 after spending 144 million dollars of her own money, then took over as CEO of HP in September 2011, steering it through a split into HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise before stepping down in 2018. Her next act, running the streaming service Quibi, launched with 1.75 billion dollars and collapsed within six months; she later served as US ambassador to Kenya, 2022 to 2024.

The executive Fortune and Harvard Business Review once ranked among the country's best-performing CEOs built her reputation at eBay and then spent her second act mostly losing it: Bloomberg named her its most underachieving CEO in 2013 partway through the HP tenure, a 2012 write-down of the British software firm Autonomy dragged her into a UK civil trial over the deal's due diligence, and Quibi's collapse became a case study in how much money still could not force a product people did not want. Her politics moved just as sharply — a longtime Republican who ran John McCain's campaign, she called Donald Trump's rise 'an astonishing display of political opportunism,' compared him to Hitler and Mussolini in 2016, endorsed Hillary Clinton, and now identifies as a registered Democrat.

Whitman left her Kenya ambassadorship in November 2024, after Trump's election, and has since taken a board seat at the AI infrastructure company CoreWeave while living in Albuquerque, where her husband now chairs neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico. The eBay years remain the fixed point of her reputation, the run that made the rest of the resume possible, while HP, Quibi and the governor's race have settled into the record as the parts a management case study warns against repeating. What she does next is, at 70, still an open question rather than a settled verdict.
