Built the first neural net, then proved what it could not do
Minsky was 23 when he built a machine that learned. SNARC, wired together in 1951 while he was a graduate student, was the first randomly wired neural network learning machine, and the interest behind it had been forming for years. His father was an eye surgeon, his mother a Zionist activist, and the schools they picked sorted hard for brains: the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, then the Bronx High School of Science, then Phillips Academy in Andover. He served in the Navy in 1944 and 1945, took a mathematics degree at Harvard in 1950, and finished a Princeton doctorate in 1954 on neural-analog reinforcement systems and the brain-model problem. The question underneath all of it was what a mind is made of.
He joined the MIT faculty in 1958 and never left. The laboratory he and John McCarthy started there in 1959 ran the field's hard problems for decades: machine vision, robot arms, and how to represent what a program knows. He invented the confocal scanning microscope, patented in 1957 and now standard equipment in biology. He advised Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the Turing Award came in 1969. His own theory arrived in The Society of Mind in 1986 — intelligence is not one thing but a crowd of small unintelligent processes with nobody in charge.
Perceptrons, written with Seymour Papert and published in 1969, is the most argued-over book the field has produced. What it did was mathematics. It proved that a single-layer perceptron, the neural network Frank Rosenblatt had made famous, could not compute functions as simple as exclusive-or, and it mapped precisely which problems lay beyond that architecture. What followed was a long collapse in money and attention for neural networks — the first AI winter, by the usual account. Minsky and Papert said for the rest of their lives that they had never set out to kill the approach, and noted that the book itself discusses multilayer networks. Researchers who revived the approach later, Geoffrey Hinton among them, have argued the chilling effect was real whatever the intent.
The approach he was blamed for burying is the one that won, and he lived to watch it happen — by 2012 layered neural networks were beating every rival method in machine vision. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Boston on January 24, 2016. Three years later, unsealed court filings named him: Virginia Giuffre said Jeffrey Epstein had directed her to have sex with him, on the island where Minsky had organized two academic symposia. His widow, the pediatrician Gloria Rudisch, denied it. The claim was never tested. MIT's Media Lab, where he held a chair, lost its director over Epstein's money, and an outside review commissioned by MIT reported significant mistakes of judgment in January 2020.
