He announced his exit from Cleveland on a live ESPN special in July 2010 that raised 2.5 million dollars for the Boys and Girls Clubs and cost him a decade of goodwill. The owner published an open letter attacking him, fans filmed themselves burning his jersey, and Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson both said he had assembled a team rather than beaten one. The argument with Jordan will not settle, and the polling shows why: the older the respondent, the likelier Jordan. What is not in dispute is Akron. The I Promise School opened there on July 30, 2018, for children who were already failing, and he has since added a housing complex, a health center, a community center and an institute at the university. He calls the school the most important thing he has done. On June 30, 2026, after 23 seasons, he told the Lakers he would not be back. On July 24 he announced he was signing with Philadelphia, called it his last decision, and the governor of Pennsylvania declared the day LeBron James Day.
