John Paul DeJoria
b. 1944 Specialist
A homeless door-to-door salesman who built two billion-dollar brands
John Paul DeJoria was two when his Italian father and Greek mother split in Echo Park, Los Angeles, and when his mother could not keep the household afloat, he and his brother spent weekdays in an East Los Angeles foster home until he was nine. That year he started selling Christmas cards and newspapers door to door to help support the family, a pattern of scraping by that continued through John Marshall High School, two years in the Navy aboard the USS Hornet, and a run of jobs as a janitor, an encyclopedia salesman and an insurance salesman. He landed at Redken Laboratories doing entry-level hair-care work and was fired from that too, with nothing obvious lined up next.
DeJoria and hairdresser Paul Mitchell started John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980 on a 700-dollar loan, DeJoria selling shampoo door to door to salons while sleeping some nights in a 20-year-old Rolls-Royce he could not otherwise afford to keep. The company grew into one of the largest privately held hair-care lines in the country. In 1989 he co-founded Patrón Spirits with Martin Crowley, buying the rights to a small-batch tequila and building it into the brand that created America's ultra-premium tequila category from almost nothing; Bacardi bought the company outright in 2018 at a valuation of 5.1 billion dollars. DeJoria kept building afterward — a founding investor stake in the House of Blues chain in 1992, boat and yacht brands, and, from 2018, the ROKiT Group, a later venture spanning phones, motorsports and media.
The partnership that built Patrón did not end cleanly. Martin Crowley died in 2003, and DeJoria tried to buy out his half of the company through an existing buy-sell agreement; Crowley's estate concluded the offer undervalued the brand, found a competing bid from Bacardi worth roughly double, and sued to void the agreement rather than accept it. The dispute settled in 2008 by giving Bacardi a 30 percent stake while DeJoria kept operational control, a full decade before Bacardi bought the rest outright in 2018. DeJoria built his public identity around the years of homelessness and door-to-door selling that preceded Paul Mitchell, telling the story on stage and in interviews for decades after he no longer needed the money it once represented.
DeJoria remains active past 80, running ROKiT Group and speaking regularly about the years he spent broke, and the final shape of that legacy is still being written rather than settled. He signed the Giving Pledge in 2011, promising at least half his fortune to causes spanning Appalachian farming cooperatives to marine conservation and anti-trafficking work, commitments that will only be fully measured against the estate he eventually leaves. Forbes put his net worth near 3 billion dollars in 2026, built almost entirely on two consumer brands, hair care and tequila, that had nothing in common except the same broke 36-year-old behind both of them.
