The deaf Harvard "computer" who measured the size of the universe

Leavitt was the daughter of a Congregational minister in Lancaster, Massachusetts, and grew up in a household that expected seriousness rather than comfort. She studied at Oberlin for two years before finishing her degree at Harvard's Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women in 1892, taking an A-minus in her one astronomy course along the way. An illness in her mid-twenties, contracted not long after graduation while she was working as an art assistant in Wisconsin, left her progressively and permanently deaf. She volunteered without pay at the Harvard College Observatory once she was well enough to work, doing the only job the observatory's director offered women: measuring the brightness of stars on glass photographic plates, hour after hour, by hand.

Edward Pickering put Leavitt on the observatory payroll in 1902, at thirty cents an hour, and set her to cataloging variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Among 1,777 she identified, twenty-five Cepheid variables in the Small Magellanic Cloud showed a pattern: the brighter ones pulsed more slowly, and the relationship was so regular it could be graphed as a straight line. Published in 1912, the period-luminosity law let astronomers calculate a Cepheid's true distance just by timing its pulse, and it became the first reliable yardstick for measuring the universe beyond the Milky Way. She also devised the Harvard Standard, a photographic brightness scale later adopted internationally, and discovered a recurrent nova in 1913.

Leavitt's law did the work; Pickering's name went on the paper as the one who "communicated" it, with a note that the analysis had been "prepared by Miss Leavitt" — the closest thing to a byline a woman computer at the observatory could expect. She never operated the telescopes that produced her data; that job, like promotion and higher pay, went to men. She died of stomach cancer in December 1921, only fifty-three, having spent her last working months as head of stellar photometry, a title that arrived just before the illness that ended her life. In 1924 a Swedish mathematician tried to put her forward for the Nobel Prize and learned, three years too late, that she had already died; the prize cannot be awarded posthumously.

Edwin Hubble used her period-luminosity law within a few years of her death to show that the Andromeda "nebula" was a separate galaxy entirely, and then to demonstrate that the universe is expanding — the two results that reorganized twentieth-century cosmology, both built on measurements Leavitt made from a desk at Harvard. Hubble himself said she deserved the Nobel Prize she never got a chance to be nominated for while alive. A lunar crater and an asteroid carry her name now, chosen in part to honor the deaf astronomers of her generation, and her working life has since become the subject of biographies and at least one stage play, "Silent Sky."
