The Nebraska farm boy whose mold experiments rewrote what a gene does

George Wells Beadle was born October 22, 1903, on a farm outside Wahoo, Nebraska, and expected to spend his life running it. His father wanted him to take over the land, and Beadle nearly did, until a high school teacher talked him into the University of Nebraska's college of agriculture instead. There he found genetics through corn breeding, earning a bachelor's degree in 1926 and staying on for graduate research into maize chromosomes. He left for Cornell that same year, took a master's degree in 1927 and a doctorate in 1931 with a dissertation on chromosome behavior in Zea mays, then carried that training into a fellowship at Caltech, where Thomas Hunt Morgan's fly-genetics laboratory was rewriting what a gene was thought to do.

At Stanford in the early 1940s, Beadle and the biochemist Edward Tatum ran a study that reset genetics around a single clean claim. They irradiated the bread mold Neurospora crassa, produced mutants that had lost the ability to make specific vitamins and amino acids, and traced each defect to damage in a single gene, showing that genes act by directing the manufacture of particular enzymes. The one gene-one enzyme hypothesis gave molecular biology its founding sentence and its Nobel Prize, shared with Tatum and Joshua Lederberg in 1958. Beadle returned to Caltech in 1946 to chair its biology division, then left research administration altogether in 1961 to become president of the University of Chicago, where he spent seven years running a university rather than a laboratory before retiring in 1968.

The scientist who proved a single damaged gene could silently disable one enzyme and nothing else spent his last professional years running an institution instead of a bench, costing him the research career at its peak. Colleagues at Chicago found a careful experimentalist thrust into faculty revolts, budget fights, and the campus politics of the late 1960s, work he had neither trained for nor enjoyed; he stepped down in 1968, worn down by it. His personal life carried a quieter fracture too: his first marriage ended in divorce, and he raised his son David largely apart from the boy, who settled permanently in the Netherlands. Even his signature discovery had already been narrowed by the time he won it: a gene, later research showed, does not always specify one enzyme in the simple way the prize-winning slogan implied.

Beadle died June 9, 1989, in Pomona, California, after some years of declining health that included Alzheimer's disease, the geneticist's own mind eventually working against the biochemistry he had spent his career explaining. His and Tatum's mold experiments are now treated as the moment genetics became a chemical science rather than a purely observational one, the direct ancestor of the molecular biology that identified DNA's role within a decade of their Nobel Prize. Nebraska remembers him with a middle school and a research center bearing his name; the Genetics Society of America still gives an annual Beadle Award for lifetime service to the field he helped turn from breeding charts into biochemistry.
