David Ho
b. 1952 Specialist
The immigrant scientist whose drug cocktail made AIDS survivable
Ho was born November 3, 1952, in Taichung, Taiwan, the elder of two sons; his father left for the United States in 1957 to build a life for the family, and David did not join him until 1965, at twelve, arriving in Los Angeles unable to speak English. He later said the language gap pushed him toward science, where numbers needed no translation, and he became a naturalized citizen in 1970 while still in high school. He earned a biology degree with highest honors from Caltech in 1974, trained under immunologist Herman Eisen at MIT, and took his medical degree from Harvard in 1978, then trained in internal medicine at UCLA and Massachusetts General during the earliest years of a disease doctors were still calling a mysterious new immune disorder.
Ho spent the 1980s treating some of the first documented AIDS patients in Los Angeles and Boston and became founding scientific director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York in 1990. His team's central insight, reached through the mid-1990s, was that HIV mutates too fast for any single drug to suppress it for long, but that combining three drugs at once could box the virus into a corner it could not mutate its way out of. He presented the results of that combination antiretroviral therapy at the 1996 International AIDS Conference in Vancouver, and within months it had become the global standard of care, converting an HIV diagnosis from a near-certain death sentence into a manageable chronic condition for patients who could get the drugs. Time named him its 1996 Person of the Year for the work.
The press coverage around Ho's 1996 breakthrough talked about a cure, and Ho's own later research is part of why that word proved premature: his lab helped identify the latent viral reservoirs, dormant copies of HIV hiding in cells the drugs cannot reach, that let the virus rebound within weeks in almost anyone who stops the combination therapy. Three decades on, tens of millions of people worldwide take that daily regimen for life rather than a course of treatment that ends; the therapy Ho helped design manages the disease, it does not eliminate it. He has spent much of his later career chasing the reservoirs themselves, including a widely publicized COVID-19 antibody project funded by Jack Ma's foundation in 2020 that, like much of the pandemic's rapid research, produced less durable results than the early headlines suggested.
Ho remains the Clyde and Helen Wu Professor of Medicine at Columbia and scientific director at Aaron Diamond, still publishing on HIV reservoirs and cure strategies more than 500 papers into a career that has not stopped since 1996. Whether he is remembered chiefly as the physician who turned AIDS into a manageable disease or as the public face of a cure that was announced a generation too early depends on research that has not finished yet; an actual functional cure remains, as of 2026, an open scientific problem Ho is still working on himself.
