The four-foot exile who did General Electric's hardest math
Steinmetz was born in Breslau in 1865 with a curved spine and legs that would never grow past four feet — kyphosis and dwarfism his father and grandfather had both carried before him. His mother died before he turned two. He finished the Breslau gymnasium with honors and was closing in on a doctorate in mathematics when the German government, having already banned socialist newspapers and meetings, began preparing charges against him for exactly that kind of activity. He fled to Zurich in 1888 and sailed for New York the following year, arriving with almost nothing, and promptly renamed himself: Karl became Charles, and Proteus — the wise, shape-changing hunchback of the Odyssey — became the middle name his college fraternity brothers had already hung on him.
He found work with Rudolf Eickemeyer in Yonkers, publishing on magnetic energy loss before General Electric bought the firm in 1893 and inherited him along with it. His 1893 paper turned alternating-current circuit analysis, until then a nightmare of differential equations, into ordinary algebra using complex numbers — a method every electrical engineering student still learns first. He held more than 200 patents at his death, built a lightning generator at GE's Schenectady lab that produced the first man-made bolt on demand and earned him the nickname Forger of Thunderbolts, chaired Union College's electrical engineering department, and served a term as president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. In 1915, while still GE's chief consulting engineer, Schenectady's voters elected him president of the city's common council — on the Socialist ticket.
He never married, telling friends he would not risk passing his condition to a child. Instead, when his lab assistant Joseph Hayden got engaged, Steinmetz gave the couple a wing of his own house and legally adopted Hayden as his son, becoming the self-appointed grandfather of Hayden's children under his own roof. The larger arrangement of his life was just as strange: a man the German state had tried to prosecute for organizing socialists spent the second half of his life as the star engineer of one of the great trusts of American industry, and never pretended it sat easily. He kept campaigning and writing for a planned, engineered economy even as GE profited from the patents that made the electrical grid work, and he never treated the contradiction as his to resolve.
Steinmetz died in Schenectady on October 26, 1923, and is buried in the city's Vale Cemetery. The IEEE named its top engineering-achievement award for him, mathematics students still learn the Steinmetz method for AC circuits, and the story about the itemized repair bill he supposedly submitted after fixing a plant machine with a single chalk mark has outlived any documented version of it — Wikipedia itself calls it only "a famous anecdote," with no confirmed source and no agreed-upon numbers. What hasn't needed embellishing is the patent count and the textbook. The algebra is still how the work gets done.
