A ruined hardware merchant whose accident with rubber outlived him
Charles Goodyear was born into tools, not chemistry. His father ran a hardware business in Connecticut, and the son grew up around fasteners and implements, not laboratories. He married Clarissa Beecher in 1824, went into his father's trade, and then opened his own hardware store in Philadelphia in 1826. It failed within four years, and dyspepsia and debt followed together, landing him in debtor's prison for the first of several stays. Sometime around 1834, broke and casting around for a new line of work, he came across a rubber life preserver sold by the Roxbury Rubber Company and became convinced, with no chemistry training to justify the conviction, that he alone could fix rubber's one disqualifying flaw: it melted in summer heat and cracked apart in winter cold.
For eight years he chased that fix on borrowed money and other people's patience, mixing rubber with everything from magnesia to witch hazel, each batch reverting to sticky gum the first hot afternoon. In 1839, working at the Eagle India Rubber Company in Woburn, Massachusetts, he pressed a rubber-and-sulfur compound against a hot stove expecting it to melt like every batch before it. Instead it charred at the edges and held its shape through both heat and cold. He named the process vulcanization, after the Roman god of fire, and spent five more years defending the idea before the patent office finally granted the definitive version, US Patent No. 3,633, on June 15, 1844. Rubber stopped being a curiosity and became an industrial material inside a single decade, waterproof boots, hose, insulated wire, and eventually tires.
The patent brought him almost no peace. Manufacturers infringed it immediately, and Goodyear spent the 1840s and 1850s in courtrooms rather than workshops, at one point paying Daniel Webster eight thousand dollars to argue the case himself. Overseas the trouble ran worse: the British inventor Thomas Hancock filed a nearly identical patent weeks ahead of Goodyear's own attempt to register there and won the resulting fight outright. In 1855, while demonstrating vulcanized rubber at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, Goodyear was jailed for debt again, this time in France, and was inducted into the Legion of Honour while still locked up. He never controlled the industry his own discovery had created. When he died in 1860, his estate owed roughly two hundred thousand dollars, more than the patent had ever paid him.
His son, Charles Jr., spent years untangling the finances the lawsuits had left behind. The company that carries the family name arrived decades later and without him: Frank Seiberling founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1898, choosing the name to honor an inventor he had never met and who had never built a tire company of his own. Goodyear's actual estate produced no dynasty and no fortune. What survived was the process itself, unglamorous and everywhere, in shoe soles, hoses, and eventually automobile tires, plus a chemistry-industry medal that has carried his name since 1941, awarded to researchers who advanced the field he had entered with no formal training at all.
