Alice Walton

Alice Walton grew up the only daughter among four children in Bentonville, Arkansas, the dime-store town her father, Sam Walton, was building into a retail empire. She earned an economics degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, then went to work not in the family stores but in finance, as an equity analyst and money manager, running investment activities for the family's Arvest Bank Group and later trading as a broker for E.F. Hutton. In 1988 she founded her own investment bank, the Llama Company, in Fayetteville, and ran it as president and chief executive for a decade before closing it in 1998. Walmart stock, not the bank, was where the real money already was.

In 2005 Walton spent 35 million dollars to buy Asher Durand's Kindred Spirits from the New York Public Library, a purchase criticized in New York and celebrated in Arkansas for keeping a canonical American painting off the market. It became the seed of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, opened in Bentonville in 2011, a 200,000-square-foot building by architect Moshe Safdie on 120 acres, funded partly with her own money, offering free admission that drew more than five million visitors within a decade. She followed it with Art Bridges, a foundation that lends major American art to smaller regional museums, and in 2025 opened the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, built around a philosophy of whole-person rather than purely clinical care.

The fortune behind the museum came from a company whose labor practices drew sustained criticism for decades, low wages, thin benefits, aggressive resistance to unionization, even as Walton spent hundreds of millions putting free art in front of the public. Her own record includes two driving incidents that never became more than a footnote because of who she was, in 1989 she struck and killed 50-year-old Oleta Hardin in Fayetteville and was not charged, and in 1998 she was fined 925 dollars after a DUI arrest that began when she crashed into a gas meter. An earlier accident, a Jeep rollover in Mexico in 1983, left her with severe leg fractures that took years to heal.

Walton's net worth passed 116 billion dollars in 2025, making her the richest woman in the world, and she has spent a large share of it turning Bentonville from a company town into an art destination with a free museum, a research foundation, and now a medical school. Whether that adds up to a genuine second legacy, distinct from Walmart, or simply a very large, very tasteful rebranding of the same fortune, is not something Bentonville, or the rest of the country, has settled yet. The medical school in particular, barely a year old, has not yet produced a graduating class, or a verdict on what it changes.
