He read fluently at three, and by his own count had got through about 150 books before he reached first grade, which meant school had little left to tell him. His grandfather was the writer Clifton Johnson and his uncle the sailor and author Irving Johnson. His father worked in physiology, and the family moved where the work went. Kay grew up into a working jazz guitarist and spent a year teaching guitar in Denver. Then the Army drafted him. He qualified for Air Force officer training, passed an aptitude test, and was made a programmer — which is how a working musician ended up with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and molecular biology from Colorado in 1966 and, three years after that, a doctorate in computer science from Utah.

At Utah he worked under David Evans and Ivan Sutherland, took apart Sutherland's Sketchpad and the Norwegian language Simula, and built a machine called FLEX for his 1969 dissertation. On December 9, 1968 he sat in the audience for Douglas Engelbart's demonstration in San Francisco and called it one of the greatest experiences of his life. What he came out with was not a better computer. It was the Dynabook — a notebook-sized machine, written up in 1972 under the title A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages, meant for children to build things with rather than for engineers to calculate on. At Xerox PARC from 1970 he ran the Learning Research Group, which produced Smalltalk and the overlapping-window desktop, and he coined the phrase object-oriented programming. The Turing Award came in 2003, the Kyoto and Draper prizes in 2004.

The industry took the pictures and left the argument. Overlapping windows, icons, a mouse-driven desktop — all of it shipped, and made a great many people rich, and the part Kay cared about did not. Smalltalk was built so that children could construct their own simulations, and what the market wanted was a friendlier way to run a spreadsheet. He has spent 40 years saying so. He is sorry he coined the word objects, he says, because it got people to focus on the lesser idea when the big idea was messaging. He calls the working culture of software a pop culture, meaning one with a disdain for its own history. And he does not accept that the Dynabook exists: the hardware arrived long ago, but the software and the curriculum that were the whole point never did.

He kept moving and kept building — chief scientist at Atari from 1981, an Apple Fellow from 1984, a Disney Fellow after the Apple research group closed in 1997, a senior fellow at HP Labs from 2002, and from 2001 to 2018 the head of his own Viewpoints Research Institute. The tools travelled with him: Squeak, an open-source Smalltalk begun in December 1995, and the Etoys authoring system a year later, both of which ended up on the One Laptop Per Child machine. The honours are settled — Turing, Kyoto, Draper, the National Academy of Engineering, honorary doctorates from Stockholm to Edinburgh. The argument is not. Kay turned 86 in May 2026, and his position has not moved.
